Position piece published on TINS

Acknowledging the need for alternative spaces for scientific practice, we published a new position piece in Trends in Neuroscience explores the idea of “third spaces” for science: open and collaborative research environments designed to support independent scholars, citizen scientists, artists, and researchers working outside traditional institutions. The article argues that many talented researchers are excluded from long-term scientific work due to precarious academic careers, limited funding opportunities, and increasing administrative pressures. By combining shared resources, open science practices, and community-driven collaboration, third spaces could help create more accessible, inclusive, and socially engaged ways of doing science.
